SEO and AI Visibility: Ranking in Google and Getting Cited by AI in 2025

Search is no longer ten blue links. How to rank in Google and, at the same time, get cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Overviews.

For years, SEO meant one thing: reaching Google's first page. In 2025 the landscape has shifted. People now ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews, and often get the answer without a single click. Visibility is no longer just ranking — it is also being cited by the answer engine itself as a source.

Two new terms emerged from this: AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) and GEO (Generative Engine Optimization). They do not replace classic SEO; they build on it.

The SEO foundations still hold

Before chasing AI citations, make sure the basics hold. Answer engines draw heavily from pages that already rank well, so a technically healthy site with proper crawling, clean Core Web Vitals and substantive content remains a prerequisite.

Track in Search Console which queries bring you impressions and clicks, and work the search intent: pages that clearly answer a question win both in classic search and in AI answers.

AEO: become the clean answer

Answer engines prefer content that is easy to extract. Structure your pages with clear question-style headings, short direct answers at the start of each section, and lists or tables where they fit. A good test: if someone read only the first sentence of each section, would they get the right answer?

Add structured data (schema.org) — FAQPage, HowTo, Article — so engines understand the structure, and strengthen E-E-A-T with clear authorship, update dates and references to credible sources.

GEO: earn the citation from the model

Large language models tend to cite sources that are clear, backed by data, and frequently referenced elsewhere. In practice that means: write with concrete numbers and examples instead of generalities, name your entity (brand, product) explicitly so it associates with the topic, and build presence on sources the models trust.

Check what the models already say about you: ask ChatGPT and Perplexity directly about your sector and see whom they cite. That gives you the real "SERP" of the AI era and shows where you fall short.

Measure the new visibility

In GA4, isolate referral traffic from sources like chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai to see whether AI engines already send people. In parallel, track your presence within AI Overviews for your core queries — even without a click, a mention builds recognition.

Takeaway

SEO in 2025 is not a choice between Google and AI — it is both. A clean technical base, content that answers clearly, and evidence-backed claims win you Google rankings and answer-engine citations at the same time.
